Stephen Fagan Founder Creative Director – Treehouse Republic – Main speaker Bio

Stephen Fagan started in animation in 1996 and has continued to work in the creative space ever since. In 2010 after working in a variety of different roles Stephen along with his partners established Treehouse Republic. Over the past 5 years Treehouse Republic has grown as a producer of animation production services and developer of its own entertainment brands focusing entirely on action comedy content for boys. In 2015 Treehouse Republic was selected as one of the Top 25 up and coming animation studios in the world by Animation World Magazine and continues to grow internationally. Very much a big picture thinker Stephen balances out his creative side with a passion for business and strategic thinking. Having a clear view from both perspectives gives Stephen a unique look on animation and the Creative industries.Stephen is very passionate about encouraging others to find worthwhile work by finding their niche and spends a lot of his spare time mentoring others move into their preferred space.

At Treehouse Republic we are passionate about visual storytelling, we showcase our work through the delivery of fully animated, interactive and live action content.For us, telling stories, whether in the form of a film, television series, game, e-learning project, corporate video or a commercial, is all about engaging with the audience. We focus on delivering high quality visual content to engage audiences and communicate messages. Budgets always vary but with our creative, enthusiastic and talented team, we are constantly working on new ways to communicate stories as effectively as possible.


Animation Workshop Outline : (Half Day )

Case Study Workshop : Commercial/ Corporate with an ever expanding array of creative opportunists picking your path now is more difficult than ever, This workshop is all about finding your Niche.

Pre -Production: (10am-12pm)

Concept Designs- Established the look and style of the commercial accompanied by stills and images of artwork that inspired the storyline in advertising in Design- Looking at the final model sheets of the characters as well as model sheets from our other productions. Storyboards/Animatic- This covers how we took the script to storyboard stage. Explain how important the storyboarding in regards to camera shots and pacing etc.Backgrounds- A look at how we developed the style of the backgrounds and environments. How colour plays a vital part in setting the mood and tone of a scene etc.

Production & Open Floor Discussion ( 12pm – 12.45pm )

ANIMATION- Covers the process of animating a scene. What materials is he/she provided with? What are the principals of animation. We can then run through examples of how a scene starts as rough animation and end with a finish piece.

COMPOSITING- This is the part of production where a compositor takes the animation and background and start to add light and shade to the scenes, camera move, glows, fx etc. It’s a hugely important part of the process. We’ve always found that when we run people through what our compositors do and how they can completely the look of a shot.

Post Production – SFX and Music –    ( 12.45 – 1pm ) End of Day

Niall Brady Supervising Sound Editor – Screen Scene Post Production Hse, D2

Niall Brady is a supervising sound editor and sound designer who has been working in the Irish film industry for over 15 years. He completed a degree in Communications Studies (Film and Broadcasting) at DIT, cheap valium no rx Aungier St., in 1997. Niall then started working in post-production as an assistant picture editor synching dailies on ‘Ballykissangel’. After a couple of years in the picture department he migrated to working in post production sound and has since edited and designed sound on many hours of film and television. In that time he has been a member of sound teams that have won two IFTAs (Pure Mule, 2005, and Albert Nobbs, 2012) and one MPSE Golden Reel Award for Sound Effects Editing ( Game of Thrones, Series 1, 2012). He works at Screen Scene and Ardmore Sound.Recent Film credits include Frank (2014, dir. Lenny Abrahamson), Queen & Country ( 2014, dir. John Boorman), Mister John (2013, dir Joe Lawlor, Christine Molloy), What Richard Did (2012, dir. Steve Fanagen Sound Designer – Ardmore Sound , Bray, Co Dublin    

Steve Fanagan is an award winning sound designer, editor and re-­recording mixer, based atArdmore Sound and Screenscene. He studied Communications DCU graduating in 2000. He has,over many years, pursued a career in music, both performing and in the recording studio. In 2008, he participated in the FAS/Screen Training Ireland, Ardmore Sound, Sound Editor Training Programme and subsequently entered the film and television sound post production sector.

    • “Glassland “ Case study : An outline and explanation of the roles of each member of the Sound Team, the location recordist, the supervising sound editor, the sound designer, dialogue editor, effects editor and a brief outline of film sound workflow from picture cutting room to final mix, also why we have chosen to focus on Glassland and how our workflow on this film compares and contrast with bigger budget film in relation to crewing, design, editing, mixing etc. This comparing and contrasting will help illuminate how EVERY film requires different approaches and presents different challenges.

 

  • We will pick 3-5 key scenes from ‘ Glassland’ and break them down into their key layers,dialogue, production effects, sound effects,, ambience’s and music, and explain how the sound of each scene evolved from the script to the final mix . This will demonstrate how the sound design aesthetic evolves from the script through pre-production to the cutting room to the mix. We will do these break downs with examples of work-in-progress and final mix audio sessions from ‘ Glassland ‘, therefore giving the participants a real insight into the many stages and layers that are combined to create the final mix track of a film.

 

12:30 – 1:00pm

Open discussion about ‘ Glassland ’ and as well as a more general discussion about the sound departments role in film making. Open to questions throughout the day.
